The Sobering Consequences of Substance Abuse

It is often said that addiction, unless experienced, is an internal conflict that most people can never comprehend. Yet an unfortunate reality exists in the fact that substance abuse has become one of the most tragic (and lethal) epidemics to plague our society in recent years.

In the U.S. alone, over 23 million Americans are estimated to suffer from alcohol and/or drug-related addictions. According to the anti-drug campaign, DrugAbuse.gov, substance abuse in the U.S. costs taxpayers a whopping $600 billion, annually, in expenditures induced by crime, lost work, productivity, and healthcare!

In the past, abuse of both alcohol and illicit drugs have generally reigned supreme, but in recent years, prescription pills seem to leave a habit-forming taste in the mouths of nearly 6.1 million American addicts.  The preferred narcotic of our generation, prescription drugs are responsible for approximately 45 percent of overdose deaths in America, and result in a staggering $53.4 billion in overdose-related expenditures.

Such alarming figures have given rise to the necessity of the substance abuse counselor industry as an alternative coping mechanism for combating addiction. If you or someone you know is struggling with substance abuse, it is pertinent to both address and remedy these devastating addictions, before they result in deadly consequences.
